How to fight skin pigmentation and sun spots at home

This is typically the heaviest strength you will get without a prescription and therefore more likely to be successful than products with less active ingredient.


Alpha hydroxy acid products

Alpha hydroxyl acids (AHA’s) are a good option to use in conjunction with skin lightening creams. The speed up the rate in which our skin exfoliates away dead skin cells and therefore help to encourage new skin cell growth. This may help you achieve skin lightening results more quickly. However, be mindful that this requires a certain level of know-how as you need to ascertain the correct peel percentage. A good starting point is often around 15-20% of Lactic acid, but those with sensitive skin may still encounter problems with this kind of peel. Do some research on what you will need to get the job done, without damaging your skin’s protective barrier function.

It is also worth looking into what the cause of your skin pigmentation may be as this may help you prevent further pigmentation. There are several different causes of hyperpigmentation. Some of the most common are sun damage and hormonal imbalances. For example, many women suffer from hyperpigmentation when taking the birth control pill.

Always wear sunscreen when heading outside and try to steer clear of excess sun and exposure during the middle of the day. This is particularly important if you live in a warm climate.
